LAS VEGAS — Several people were detained for questioning after police found a man suffering from gunshot wounds in the backyard of an east Las Vegas home early Wednesday, authorities said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the 4500 block of East Ogden Avenue at about 4:29 a.m. Aug. 5 after dispatchers received a ShotSpotter notification and a 911 call reporting gunfire. The neighborhood is near Charleston and Lamb boulevards. Homicide detectives took over the investigation as officers secured the property and began interviewing people who had been at or near the residence.
Homicide Lt. Robert Price said several people who came from the residence around the time of the shooting were detained so detectives could speak with them. Police emphasized in the initial briefing that those people had not been formally charged in connection with the death. Authorities had not publicly identified a suspected shooter.
Officers found the wounded man in the backyard and began providing emergency aid, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Local reports described him as an adult believed to be in his 30s or 40s. The Clark County coroner had not publicly released his identity in the initial reports reviewed after the shooting.
Investigators had not disclosed what led to the gunfire or whether the victim knew any of the people detained for questioning. Police also had not publicly explained whether the man lived at the property, was visiting the home or arrived there under other circumstances. Those questions remained part of the homicide investigation.
The exact number of people detained was described differently in early coverage. One report said police were questioning six or seven people, while FOX5 Las Vegas reported only that several people had been detained. The distinction did not change police’s central account that the individuals were being interviewed and had not, at that stage, been announced as arrested suspects in the killing.
Price described the shooting as an isolated incident and said police did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public. Detectives continued processing the scene and gathering information about the events that preceded the shooting. Authorities had not announced a possible motive or publicly said whether a firearm had been recovered.
The shooting occurred in a residential section of the east Las Vegas Valley during the early morning hours. Police asked people to avoid the immediate area while investigators worked at the scene. The department’s Homicide Section remained responsible for determining who fired the fatal shots and what role, if any, the detained individuals may have played.
As of the latest public reports, police had not announced an arrest or released the victim’s name. The investigation remained active, with the victim’s formal identification and additional findings expected to depend on further police work and information released by the Clark County coroner.
