NAPA, California – A married couple from Portland, both executives with Nike, tragically lost their lives after being struck by lumber that slid off a passing truck while they were riding bicycles in Napa Valley. Christian and Michelle Deaton were cycling down the Silverado Trail on Tuesday morning when a flatbed truck attempted to pass them at around 40 mph. The lumber stacked in the truck’s bed shifted, causing part of it to hang over the edge and strike the Deatons. Christian, 52, died at the scene, while Michelle, 48, passed away at the hospital.

The driver of the truck, a 55-year-old man from Vallejo, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. It is unclear whether he will face any criminal charges, as police have not made any official statements regarding the matter.

Friends and colleagues mourn the loss of the adventurous couple, who had been married for 21 years and were known for their love of travel and physical activity. According to those who knew them, Christian and Michelle lived life to the fullest and were always seeking new experiences. Christian, a vice president of product and merchandising at Nike Swim, was described as someone who loved to sing, dance, and play air guitar. Michelle, an EQ design studio director, was known for her strength and infectious laughter.

The Deatons resided in a million-dollar penthouse in Portland and had embarked on a two-week road trip that included concerts and stops in California and Las Vegas. Their friends remember them as a couple who shared an immense amount of love for each other and made the most out of every moment.

The tragic accident occurred on a stretch of road that is marked with a bike lane and warning signs for drivers. Kara Vernor from the Napa County Bicycle Coalition expressed her sadness over the incident, stating that Silverado Trail has a higher rate of severe and fatal collisions compared to other roads in the county.

The loss of Christian and Michelle Deaton has left their friends and loved ones devastated. As the investigation into the accident continues, the community mourns the loss of a couple who lived life to the fullest and left an indelible mark on those around them.
