Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk over the weekend, discussing the future of artificial intelligence in Israel and cooperation between the tech mogul and the Jewish state.

Shortly after arriving in Florida on Sunday, the prime minister held a conference call with Musk from his hotel, where he was joined by Transportation Minister Miri Regev and the head of the National AI Directorate, Erez Eskel.

During the conversation, Netanyahu, Regev, and Eskel spoke with Musk about the advancement and development of AI technologies in Israel.

Netanyahu told Musk that Israel intends to “catapult Israel forward and turn it into a global leader in the field,” according to a statement by the Prime Minister’s office, “exactly as we did with cyber and other technologies.”

During the call, the four also discussed ongoing cooperation with Tesla and the advancement of legislation regarding autonomous vehicles.

The prime minister and transportation minister extended an invitation to Musk to participate in a Smart Transportation Conference to be held in Israel in March, with Musk accepting the invitation.

Musk has engaged with Israeli leaders in the past, including Netanyahu, regarding artificial intelligence.

In September 2023, Netanyahu joined Musk for a panel discussion, hosted by a Tesla facility in California, regarding the ethics of artificial intelligence.

Two months later, following the Hamas invasion of Israel, Musk visited the Jewish state, meeting with Netanyahu for a publicly broadcast conversation on artificial intelligence, including regulations and the abuse of AI technology.
