Hamas confirmed on Sunday that Ahmad Zamzam, a senior officer in the terrorist organization’s Interior Ministry, was killed overnight in the al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, as Israel continues to intensify pressure on Hamas leadership following repeated ceasefire violations.

In an official statement, Hamas said Zamzam was “assassinated by armed men” in the camp. The group claimed that its internal security apparatus has arrested one suspect and opened an investigation into the incident.

“Ahmad Zamzam, an officer in the Interior Ministry of Hamas, was killed by armed men in the al-Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip,” the Hamas Interior Ministry said. “Security services have arrested a suspect and an investigation is underway.”

Saudi-owned Al-Hadath reported that Zamzam was killed in a targeted operation carried out by an elite Israel Defense Forces unit. However, an Israeli security official denied the Saudi report, rejecting the claim that a “special IDF force” was involved in the killing. There has been no official confirmation from Israel regarding responsibility for the incident.

The killing comes just hours after Israel carried out a high-profile strike eliminating Ra’ad Saad, the deputy commander of Hamas’s military wing and one of the most senior figures in the organization’s armed leadership. Saad was widely regarded as a veteran operative and a key figure in Hamas’s military hierarchy, second only to current military wing chief Izz al-Din al-Haddad.

Following Saad’s elimination, a channel affiliated with Hamas’s military wing issued an internal warning to operatives late Saturday, urging heightened alert. “We estimate that the coming hours may include escalation by Israel,” the message read. “All operatives are called upon to exercise vigilance and caution, especially in movement, communications, and nighttime presence.”

After the strike on Saad, Hamas accused Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement. In a statement, the terror group claimed that “the attack on a civilian vehicle in western Gaza City constitutes a continuation of the violation of the ceasefire agreement signed in accordance with Trump’s plan.” Hamas alleged that Israel was seeking to deliberately undermine the agreement through escalation.

“This crime once again highlights that Israel seeks to intentionally destabilize and sabotage the ceasefire agreement through the escalation of its ongoing violations,” the statement said.

Hamas further claimed that “the Israeli government bears full responsibility for the consequences of its crimes against the Palestinian people and for violations of the ceasefire agreement, including harm to its people, operatives, and leaders.” The group called on mediators and guarantor states to intervene and “urgently act to restrain the Israeli government.”

Israeli officials have consistently stated that military actions against Hamas leadership are defensive measures taken in response to the group’s ongoing violations, continued terror activity, and refusal to adhere to ceasefire terms. The latest developments point to mounting pressure on Hamas’s command structure as Israel signals it will continue acting decisively to protect its citizens and forces.
