Classes resumed Wednesday after police said the death appeared isolated and there was no continuing danger to the public.
MARANA, Ariz. — Marana High School reopened Wednesday, one day after a student was found dead on campus, prompting administrators to cancel classes and activities while police investigated the circumstances surrounding the death.
Marana police responded to the school at about 6:47 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, after staff members discovered the student. Police said preliminary information indicated the student had entered the campus without authorization at about 1:30 a.m. Two staff members later found the student dead. Authorities said the incident appeared to involve only one person and that there was no continuing danger to students, staff or the surrounding community.
Police have not publicly released the student’s name, age or cause of death. The student’s family has been notified, authorities said. Investigators also have not publicly explained why the student entered the campus during the early-morning hours or disclosed additional circumstances surrounding the death. Police described the investigation as ongoing.
The discovery led the Marana Unified School District to cancel classes for Tuesday and close the campus while officers conducted their investigation. Staff members who had already reported for work were safe, and the district told families that the campus had been secured. Police remained at the school for much of the day as investigators worked at the scene.
The district announced later Tuesday that Marana High would reopen Wednesday and that classes would follow their normal schedule. Local reporting confirmed that students returned to school and campus activities resumed. The district’s crisis response team was also scheduled to be on campus to assist students and employees affected by the death.
In a message to families and staff, district officials said the school community was heartbroken by the student’s death and acknowledged that the news had caused widespread shock. Administrators met with Marana High staff Tuesday along with members of the district crisis response team and Marana police before the campus reopened.
The district said it was also reviewing how the student entered the campus. When asked whether a security alarm had been activated, district officials said the circumstances surrounding the entry and the school’s security system were being investigated. The district said it would continue working with law enforcement as that review continued.
Most sporting events and after-school activities scheduled for Tuesday were canceled because of the closure. A volleyball match was moved to Tucson High School, according to the district. Normal school operations resumed the following day.
Marana police have said they are not searching for another person in connection with the death. Authorities have not announced evidence that anyone else was involved, and no cause or manner of death had been publicly released as of Friday. The investigation into the student’s death and the circumstances of the early-morning campus entry remains open.
