Teen Employee Killed During Altercation Inside McDonald’s

Authorities identified the victim as 17-year-old Reginald Harrell and said a 16-year-old fellow employee remained at the scene after the stabbing.

CYPRESS, Texas — A 17-year-old McDonald’s employee was fatally stabbed during an altercation with a 16-year-old coworker at a northwest Harris County restaurant, authorities said, and the younger teen was later charged with murder.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified the victim as Reginald Harrell. Authorities said Harrell and the 16-year-old suspect both worked at the McDonald’s in the 13300 block of Louetta Road in Cypress. The suspect, whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile, was booked into the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center. Investigators have not announced a motive for the stabbing.

Deputies with Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman’s office responded after a manager reported a stabbing at the restaurant around midnight Wednesday into Thursday. Authorities said deputies detained the 16-year-old at the scene and found Harrell wounded inside a restroom. Employees and emergency responders attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the restaurant.

Investigators said the two teenagers had been involved in an altercation before the stabbing. Authorities have released few details about how the confrontation began or what may have caused it to escalate. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Harrell’s death.

The case developed throughout Thursday. Early reports described both teenagers only as juveniles and said the younger worker had been detained. Officials later identified Harrell, confirmed the ages of both teenagers and announced that the 16-year-old had been charged with murder. The charge is an allegation, and the juvenile has not been found guilty.

Harrell’s family told ABC13 that he was a high school senior who began working at the McDonald’s earlier this year. Relatives described him as loving, fun and often smiling. His mother told the station that the family did not know what could have led someone to harm him. Authorities likewise had not publicly identified a motive as of Thursday night.

People who work in the shopping center expressed shock over the killing. Local business operators told ABC13 that they had generally considered the area safe and had positive experiences with employees at the restaurant. The McDonald’s remained closed Thursday as investigators continued working on the case.

Restaurant owner Michael Gutierrez said in a statement that the company was saddened by the death and was providing support to employees affected by the incident. The statement expressed sympathy for Harrell’s loved ones and others affected by the killing.

Because the suspect is 16, the case is currently being handled in the juvenile justice system. Authorities have not released his identity. FOX 26 reported that whether a juvenile case moves into the adult criminal system would require additional legal proceedings and consideration by the courts. No such transfer had been announced Thursday.

Investigators had not publicly said whether a weapon was recovered, whether surveillance video captured the confrontation or what statements witnesses may have provided. Officials also had not announced any evidence establishing why the altercation began. Those questions remain part of the continuing homicide investigation.

The 16-year-old remained in juvenile custody Thursday night on the murder charge while Harris County investigators continued examining the fatal confrontation. Harrell’s death remains under investigation, and authorities had not announced additional arrests or a motive.
