Police said the gunman was among the dead and the public faced no continuing threat after the crowded shopping area was secured.
TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Three people were killed, including the suspected gunman, and several others were injured Saturday when a shooter opened fire near a recently opened In-N-Out Burger in a busy Twin Falls shopping district, authorities said.
The shooting was reported at about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 1 in a commercial area near Blue Lakes Boulevard and the Magic Valley Mall. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said officers found the suspected shooter dead and determined that the threat to the community had ended. Authorities had not released the names of the gunman or the other people killed as of early Sunday.
Early reports differed on the number of people wounded as investigators and medical workers gathered information. Local station KMVT reported that police had confirmed five injured people, while a later Associated Press report citing a city spokesperson put the number at seven. Some patients were described as critically injured. Officials said the totals could change as the investigation continued.
Videos recorded by witnesses showed customers and employees running from the restaurant and surrounding parking lot as gunfire erupted. Other footage appeared to show an armed man near vehicles in the drive-thru area. Police cautioned that images circulating online did not provide a complete account of what happened.
Some videos appeared to show a second armed person firing during the incident, leading to early reports that two attackers may have been involved. Police later said they believed there was one primary shooter. Witness accounts indicated that another armed person may have confronted or returned fire at the gunman, but authorities had not publicly confirmed that person’s identity or full role.
The violence caused widespread disruption around the crowded retail district. Businesses near Canyon Park and the Magic Valley Mall locked their doors or sheltered customers. Police cleared portions of the mall parking area, closed nearby roads and temporarily shut down the Perrine Bridge while officers searched the area and worked to determine whether another threat remained.
Officers from Twin Falls, Buhl and Jerome responded alongside Idaho State Police, Twin Falls firefighters and Magic Valley Paramedics. Law enforcement personnel collected witnesses from the scene and moved them to other locations for interviews. Authorities also searched nearby buildings as a precaution during the initial response.
Employees at neighboring restaurants said they heard gunshots and saw frightened people running through the parking lot. Workers at a nearby Mo’ Bettahs restaurant locked the building and moved customers toward the back while police and tactical officers secured the area. People remained sheltered inside some businesses for several hours.
St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center confirmed that it treated people connected to the shooting but declined to release information about individual patients or their conditions, citing privacy rules and the need to allow law enforcement to notify families. The hospital temporarily restricted visitors while continuing emergency and urgent-care services.
In-N-Out said it was assisting the Twin Falls Police Department with the investigation. The company also expressed condolences to customers, employees and their families. Reports said an In-N-Out employee was among those killed, though authorities had not publicly identified the victims.
The Twin Falls restaurant had opened July 24, about one week before the shooting. Large crowds had visited the location as the California-based chain expanded farther into Idaho. The shooting occurred during a busy Saturday afternoon in one of the city’s major shopping areas.
Investigators were working to identify the shooter, determine a motive and establish the sequence of events. Police said there was no continuing danger to the public, but asked anyone with relevant video or firsthand information to provide it to investigators. Additional details were expected after families were notified and witness interviews were completed.
