Ashford, a cherished figure in his community, was tending to an unwell calf when a startled horse dragged him across a field. The Lott Volunteer Fire Department confirmed the incident.
Emergency personnel found Ashford alive but critically injured, suffering from severe head trauma. Despite being airlifted to a local hospital, the young man ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Ashford, a gifted roper, had been participating in rodeo activities since the tender age of four. He was gearing up to compete for Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas, in the forthcoming fall season, as reported by The Team Roping Journal.
Cody Snow, a National Finals Rodeo roper who was close to Ashford, characterized him as “pure gold.” Snow recalled a recent occasion when Ashford and his father visited his home for a roping session before heading to Lovington. Snow expressed his appreciation for the final moments they shared together.
Marcus Becerra, another friend of Ashford, told the Journal that Ace was the kind of individual parents would want their children to look up to. Becerra, who had previously competed and won alongside Ashford, lauded his horsemanship and courteous behavior.
A Facebook post by Troy Ashford Farmers Insurance, his father’s company, portrayed Ace as an “extraordinary and modest young man” who had just graduated from high school. The post conveyed profound grief for the Ashford family’s loss and offered prayers for peace and solace to all who knew Ace.
The sudden death of Ashford has sent ripples of shock and sorrow through the community. An online obituary depicted the loss as a struggle for those who knew and loved him, as they grapple with the premature death of a young man brimming with potential, kindness, and humility.
