Investigators are examining whether speed contributed after the vehicle left Lookout Lane and traveled down a steep hillside.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Five 17-year-old boys were killed after a vehicle left a residential road and went down a steep hillside in western Colorado late Saturday, authorities said, in a crash that remained under investigation Tuesday.
The teenagers were all Grand Junction residents, according to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office. Police said the vehicle was traveling south on Lookout Lane when it veered from the roadway and descended the hillside. All five occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are examining speed as a possible contributing factor, but authorities have not announced what caused the vehicle to leave the road.
Emergency dispatchers received a report at about 7:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, that a vehicle may have gone over the edge of a cliff in the 2000 block of Lookout Lane, according to the Grand Junction Police Department. Officers and firefighters responded and found the crashed vehicle on the hillside. Investigators believe the collision occurred during the late hours of Saturday, Aug. 8.
The police department said the vehicle had been traveling southbound before it left the road and went down the steep incline. The crash occurred near a residential area in Grand Junction. CBS Colorado reported that a passing driver spotted the wreckage Sunday morning and called 911, bringing emergency crews to a crash that apparently had occurred hours earlier.
Reaching the vehicle required a coordinated response on the steep terrain. Personnel from the Grand Junction Fire Department, Mesa County Search and Rescue, Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Coroner’s Office participated in the recovery operation. CBS Colorado reported that responders used ropes to descend to the crash site. Authorities have not announced that anyone outside the vehicle was involved in the collision.
The coroner’s office later confirmed that all five people in the vehicle were 17-year-old boys from Grand Junction. Three occupants were wearing seat belts, including the driver and the passenger in the front seat. Two others were not wearing seat belts and were ejected during the crash, the coroner’s office said. Autopsies determined that all five died from injuries caused by the motor vehicle crash.
Officials have not publicly released the teenagers’ names. The coroner’s office said it would withhold their identities because they were minors. Some relatives and others have identified individual victims publicly, but authorities have maintained their policy of not releasing the names. Officials also have not publicly said whether all five attended the same school or released further details about their relationships.
The deaths came as students in Mesa County were preparing to return to school. CBS Colorado reported that Mesa County Valley School District 51 planned to make support resources available to students and employees as classes resumed Tuesday. The Grand Junction Police Department also said its victim services unit was available to help people affected by the deaths.
The police department acknowledged the impact of losing five teenagers in a single crash, saying Monday that its members were grieving with the community. The department described the people it serves as neighbors, friends and family and said support was available to those struggling with the losses. The statement came as investigators continued working to determine the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving Lookout Lane.
Speed remained one focus of the investigation as of Tuesday, but police have not said that excessive speed was established as the cause. Authorities also had not publicly announced other possible contributing factors or released a final reconstruction of the crash. No finding explaining why the vehicle veered from the roadway had been made public.
The Grand Junction Police Department said the investigation remains active. Further findings about the vehicle’s movement, the circumstances before the crash and the role speed may have played had not been released as of Tuesday.
