President Donald Trump came close to authorizing a renewed wave of military strikes against Iran last Friday but reversed the decision at the last moment, according to senior U.S. officials.

Sources in Washington said Trump was on the verge of approving a major attack before an updated Iranian proposal to end the war was delivered, prompting him to pause and allow negotiations to continue instead. He subsequently directed U.S. forces to proceed with operations in the Strait of Hormuz under “Project Freedom.”

Despite the shift, officials said the military option remains firmly on the table. Trump is under increasing pressure to resume strikes, and has been in frequent contact with figures urging a more aggressive approach.

Officials said that if Trump determines talks have reached a dead end, he is prepared to move quickly with a short, high-intensity military campaign.
