Iran’s leadership has reached out to the US to propose negotiations after the two countries traded threats over the past few days, President Donald Trump claimed, while adding that despite the overture, the US may still strike the Islamic Republic.
Trump has repeatedly warned Iran that the US will intervene militarily if the regime kills dissident protesters, while senior Iranian officials have condemned both the US and Israel over their support of the protests, threatening to retaliate with strikes against both countries.
Publicly, Iran has signaled its confidence in the ability of security forces to contain the ongoing demonstrations.
Speaking with foreign diplomats in Tehran, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that “the situation has come under total control.”
“That’s why the demonstrations turned violent and bloody to give an excuse to the American president to intervene.”
On Monday, the regime announced that a pro-government demonstration would be held, even as opponents of the Islamic Republic plan a new wave of protests.
Despite Tehran’s claims of stability, according to Trump, Iran reached out to the US on Saturday with an overture for negotiations.
“They do,” Trump said when asked Sunday night if Iran had requested talks.
“They called yesterday. Iran called to negotiate, yesterday. The leaders of Iran called, they wanted to negotiate. I think they are tired of being beat up by the United States. Iran wants to negotiate, yes.”
While the US and Iran are planning to open a dialogue, Trump emphasized that the US may take action against Iran, in response to events inside of Iran.
“We may meet with them. A meeting is being set up. But we may have to act, because of what is happening, before the meeting. But a meeting is being set up. Iran called, they want to negotiate.”
