The apartment building of New York Times executive editor Joseph Kahn, who is Jewish, was vandalized by anti-Israel activists who defaced the property with red paint and a threatening message in an apparent protest over the ongoing war in Gaza.
The upscale Greenwich Village building where Kahn lives was targeted early Friday morning by unknown perpetrators, who splashed red paint across its façade and front steps.
Graffiti reading “Joe Kahn Lies, Gaza Dies” was written across the sidewalk in front of the building.
New York City police confirmed they are investigating the incident, though no arrests have yet been made.
“People are free to disagree with The New York Times’s reporting but vandalism and targeting of individuals and their families crosses a line and we will work with authorities to address it,” said Charlie Stadtlander, the Times’ executive director for media relations and communications.
Although The New York Times has often been criticized for its anti-Israel bias and for promoting stories later proven false — such as allegations of starvation deaths in Gaza — Kahn has long drawn the ire of anti-Israel activists, presumably due to his Jewish heritage.
Anti-Israel activists have previously targeted The New York Times. In July 2025, activists defaced the newspaper’s Manhattan headquarters with red paint and scrawled “NYT Lies, Gaza Dies” across its front. Police have not made any arrests in connection to that earlier incident.
The vandalism of the outlet’s offices came after the Times issued a correction about a story it had recently published.
The Times had run an article about a Gazan child who supposedly died of malnutrition, but was later forced to clarify that the child in question had suffered from a myriad of pre-existing health conditions prior to the war, including a serious genetic illness.
That clarification apparently sparked the ire of anti-Israel activists, who then defaced the outlet’s building.
